Reflection

The first NETS for teachers explains that technology should be used to enhance the creativity of the classroom and create a multidimensional experience for the students. Technology should be used to make the classroom experience and academic experience outside of the classroom more engaging for students. The use of the blog could enable me to create more fun and engaging homework assignments. Thinking about a unit I wrote for another class on superheros, I had students watching trailers and analyzing what makes up an ideal superhero. If I had the blog, I could have uploaded these trailers and had the students complete this as homework that would've been more engaging and read as a class. Often reading is the default English homework because it is the easiest to assign. But, with the blog, choices open. I can make more material available to students. Homework can become more interactive and fun. It can become a demonstration of concepts and skills. Using blogs could help bring creativity out of the classroom and into students homes.

The second NETS for teachers is about weaving digital experiences for students into the curriculum. I have to say when I started this class, I was worried about technology. I am not the most tech savvy person out there. But, even just from using Powerpoint and Blogs, I have learned all of the ways digital experiences can be woven into the classroom and my assessments to help fine tune my teaching and heighten the experiences of the students. Until this class, I never knew how to make a non-linear power point. This opens a whole new world of assessments. I can give reading quizzes that specifically targets skills and go over the answers as a class. This would allow me to instantaneously assess where students are at. Blogs, I think will really give my students a digital experience. It will give a new way for talking about and demonstrating English skills. it will also give them constant access to reading guides and electronic help. It will help students advocate digitally for their own needs and ultimately for their success.

The fourth NETS for teachers is about modeling citizenry. This made me think about the concept of a digital presence. This is something I want my students to be aware of. As an English teacher, I imagine talking with students about how to market themselves and their experiences as a precursor to the college application process and the scholarship application process. Using blogs and other digital experiences, as a class we can talk about facebook, myspace, and the space students take up on the Internet. Using the Internet will be a good way to help students buy into this concept of marketing self. Part of the marketing of self is about the interactions that we have with others and with material on the internet.
